Seeing as they just started selling them again at gog.com. I doubt very much they'd turn around and give it away for free.

Even if Interplay did return, would any of the original programmers? Or would Interplay hire new peeps and the "new Descent" game wouldn't have the same feel to it. I'd love to have a "classic" feel if there ever was another D sequel. Not holding my breath on this one. I don't k...

Suggestion: Mouse Navigation and gizmos.

Decided to check out Descent mission building after a long time not doing it. In the time since I've really gotten used to using modern 3d editors like 3ds, that have mouse navigation and gizmos for editing. It's painfully slow to have to click on buttons to move geometry. Any chance of getting thes...

Untill I see the release date of a demo, I'm not going to believe it. Would it be nice? Yes. Will it happen? Probably not. If you really want a new Descent game, learn C++ and head on over to the Open Descent Foundation's web site and help our work. Wouldn't Interplay shut something like this down?...

Well there is one way to get realtime lighting with 'only' 8 lights. Before attempting lightmapping, which would have worked great except for the way that d2 handles multi-texturing, I was considering simply finding which groups of lights are visible to each other and then averaging those groups dow...

The light (vertex) colors are pre-calculated, so they will not change when a light is turned off somehow. It did on my version. I think the problem is setting the light values in render_side. My method of changing the light levels when a level load allows vertex lighting to work correctly. I think ...

Figured out the texture issue. It's using the alpha from the bottom layer. That's actually a pixel shader thing. The fix should be in the next release.

Don't know if anyone notice, but lightmapping has been put into the latest version of d2x. maybe I've got it backwards and should be.

((r * 3 + g * 5 + b * 2) / 10)^2;

In place of 2 try from .1 to 2. 1 would be linear again obviously.

My equation was just kind of generic.

a = (r * .3 + g * .5 + b * .2) ^.05;

That's just a guess.

The problem is that currently I simply hand the bitmap and a global alpha value to the OpenGL system ... ;) ... no bit-wise rendering done here. D2 bitmaps are palettized, one byte per pixel bitmaps. I would need to convert them to RGBA bitmaps, decoding each palette color to its nearest RGB equiva...

Probably the reason for the poor performance, although only a guess, is that every face in the game is drawn one by one. This is bad. Unfortunately without a complete engine rewrite it's probably going to stay that way. Luckly there aren't that many polygons to draw anyway.

Movies still play in the corner. It should be possible to stretch thoes rather than center them right? And the opening movie still plays at 640x480. Speaking of movies, it'd be cool if there was an option to play the movies from the menu.
