I'm in New Orleans.... after what the last couple of storms did here, I'm not thrilled about this one. There's still trees and gas station canopies down from two months ago. I don't think we'd survive a direct hit. Please pray for us. New Orleans is 90% below sea level. Tha last big hurricane that h...

Files different from Windows and Linux versions of D3..
I tested this, and the resulting files can be tarred into less than 10MB. That means, with a Windows install CD, and a 10MB .tar file, you can run D3 in Linux. What you keep: all .mn3, .mve, and .hog files. What you need: the executables, .d3n and d3c files, and one linux-specific .hog file. This co...

I'm somewhat paranoid about backing stuff up. I've lost gigs of data from bad drives, and I refuse to get caught again. I'm currently backing up to two separate drives (mirrored) AND a tape drive. And once a month I dump everything onto a file server for good measure. God I hate dead hard drives. At...

I absolutely LOVE my playstation dual analog stick(s). It allows me to do 10 or more things at once, without moving my hand position. With this, the only thing I can't do is reverse and rearview at the same time (which is okay, rearview is toggle-able), and fire secondarires/flares at the same time....

I don't personally see a problem with putting up the Linux-secific files online. You can download the full Linux executables for *most* games and use them with your legal Windows copies (which I have done). If the game were new, I'd say no, but come on. This is going on 10 years in the hole. Somebod...

Pug: as you saw in the other thread, this doesn't necessarily apply when you're talking the Linux version... couldn't find it mirrored anywhere, and hardly anybody sells it cause it's *out of print.* Windows version, I'd say buy a copy. Linux version, good luck finding one. That's what we have to de...

I think the data files are the same, it's the executable that's different. I haven't taken the time to look, but you could probably copy a Windows installation over and use the Linux main program. Don't ask, I'm not going to try it. I had to buy a Linux copy of D3. Nobody could give me the executabl...

It's good writing, but I think it's still too long. You might want to trim down some of the extra-long quotes. And you took my quote out, too! (Sniff, just kidding.) With that being said, I wholeheartedly liked the improvements. I think it's a HUGE step in the right direction. You also might want to...

I've liked dual joystick setups since Mechwarrior 2 first came out. However, not many games support it. I happened upon a Playstation dual flightstick and haven't looked back. It doesn't have the greatest sensitivity, and the deadzone is a bit bigger than I'd like. This is probably a mechanical limi...

Re: Wow, flash back....
Stopped playing this game well over a year and a half ago due to job, family and what appeared to be a failing population in the Descent community. On a whim, I just happened to Google "Descent 4" out of sheer boredom (besides, imagine my surprise from my Google of Hitchhikers Guide only ...

Upgrading the video drivers in Windows didn't make a lick of difference, which is what I suspected. However, I noticed that with -nosound enabled in both OSs, FPS were close to each other all around. Kinda makes you wonder... trying it with -framecap 999 and -framecap 0 didn't make any difference on...

Timetest shootout: Linux vs. Windows!
Ask and ye shall recieve. Well, I did run the same tests back-to-back, and I found out some pretty interesting results! Reference system is an MSI KN-266 board running a Duron 1.3Ghz, 512MB of SDRAM, an MSI GeForce4 MX440 32MB vid card running in dualview at 1280x1024 on each screen. Windows is XP P...

Gotcha. I finally found it, after a little looking. It creates fps.txt in the ~/.loki/descent3 directory, which would make sense if I had thought about it some more. Just for giggles, I made: 88.78 Descent3 v1.4 41 Min 117 Max running at 1280x960, in windowed mode, AA and AF on. Not bad for old hard...

Just out of curiosity, has anybody tried to run a timetest in Linux? I ran the test, and it worked fine, but I have no idea where the framerate info is output to... didn't find anything on it either here at DBB or in the READMEs. I wouldn't have anything to write home about, I'm running a Duron 1.3G...

I remember they used to have a version of Descent2 that worked with nVidia's VR goggles, but they simulated 3D by the glasses shuttering back and forth between eyes in sync with the video card. And you had to have the special version of Descent2 that came with the goggles, I think, too. I've never h...

I think you should buy another $10 joystick, and use them both. Since I've been playing with my Playstation dual joystick, I've been tossing around the idea of getting two sticks (like two Cyborgs) and using both at the same time. My current config gives me 4 buttons on each stick and a HAT on one, ...

I ran into similar problems trying to use bootable Linux distros, because I have an add-in SATA PCI card. However, I've installed several distros (currently running SuSE 9.1) and have never had a problem with HD installs. I'm running Windows on one drive, and Linux on the other. If I could do it all...

I'm 31 now, was 21 the first time I saw D1. I didn't play much, cause I didn't have a computer that would run it, but when D2 came out I jumped all over it. D3 came out, I played it, got bored cause I didn't play online. The D3 single player was extremely hard without good controls. Then last year I...
