Re: The best and crudest designed levels of D1

I like the third Mars level a lot. The large caverns are a lot more fun for fighting compared to the awful tunnel-based ambushes of the first two Mars levels. Callisto Tower Colony is hard as nails but a really enjoyable and well-designed level. I like all of the Neptune levels as well. Generally, I...

Favorite D2 Single-Player Campaigns

Hey dudes, I've finally gotten D2 working on my computer and I'm playing through the Vertigo missions for the first time in a decade or so. I recall a lot of great D2 campaigns from back in the day. It's been at least ten years (probably more) since I've really played any add-on levels, but some of ...

Re: Which robot has the creepiest sound?

Yesterday I was playing Vertigo level 7 on Ace, and having a hell of a time killing the boss. He was much harder for me than the D1 bosses on Insane (probably didn't help that there were no cloaks or invulnerability powerups around.) That bot makes one horrible noise (I don't recall if any of the ot...

Won't Run

Okay, so I've got D2X-XL installed on my Win7 machine. I've got all of the game data in the right place. But when I try to run the program, it instantly crashes. First it tells me that it can't find d2x.hog and d2x.mn2, and then it says "can't open pig and/or ham file." I don't understand ...

An-Donuts. Awesome Japanese dessert that's similar to a cream-filled doughnut, but it has delicious azuki filling instead of the regular stuff. So, so good.

These are some seriously impressive videos. Considering that I've been playing Descent since I was seven, I should be this good. I've beaten D1 on Insane with cold starts on each level, but not without dying.

Re: I am a PC Game...And I am a Space Sim...

This looks extremely cool. Makes me wish I had a nice PC to run it. You know, ever since I got D3 in 1999 at age eleven, I've been complaining about my crummy computers. I've got a full time job, my own place to live, a car, lots of nice clothes, and yet I've still never bought myself a nice PC. I d...

Do you like Descent 3?

While I play the original often and Descent 2 fairly frequently, I went ten years or so without playing through Descent 3's single-player campaign. I wasn't sure why; D3 was a fun game, how come I didn't play it? Well, after finishing my first full playthrough of D3's campaign in many years, now I r...

Re: What do you think D1 beats D2 at?

Something else I recall (from single player) is that homing missiles in D1 seem a lot stronger than D2, especially when robots are firing them at you. Those green Centurion things or whatever they're called from D2 are way less dangerous than D1's red hulks.

Re: Interesting read: The Great Depression

World War II itself did not lift the US out of depression post-war; it was the fact that most other industrialized nations besides the US were destroyed and had to rebuild themselves (with our help) that caused the recovery. And unlike the 1930s, where the depression was mostly over in other countri...

Re: If Descent was revived/re-made...

The idea for varying levels of infestation really comes from the different difficulty levels (which I'd still want in a new Descent.) Class 1 drones are pretty harmless on the lower difficulties but they act totally bonkers on insane, and their shots are much faster, too. Plus, a room full of low-le...

Re: If Descent was revived/re-made...

Actually Lothar, that's pretty close to the sort of balance I'm trying to achieve with my robot ideas - you'll notice most of them don't have tons and tons of weapons, and are designed to encourage strategic thinking in order to dispatch them. Bosses, on the other hand... I'm still coming up with id...

Re: If Descent was revived/re-made...

I'm not totally sure whether two damage gauges is a good idea, either. But I like the idea of having one that recharges (to some extent) and another that's more permanent. But maybe it would work better to just have shields and more places where they could be recharged, at least to some extent. But ...

Re: If Descent was revived/re-made...

Ah, but don't you see? That's the beauty of Descent! It's supposed to be hard as nails. I think games these days are way too easy and tend to treat the player like a baby with all sorts of hand-holding along the way. Just look at a game like Demon's Souls, which is exceptionally difficult - yet stil...

Today I cooked up some ideas for robots: some re-imagined versions of old bots, others entirely new ideas. Class 1 Drone: The original pest, now in varying degrees of viral infestation. Some are slow and dumb, while others attack you with wild abandon. Class 2 Drone: This bot was originally designed...

Of course, Japan imports the vast majority of its food, so food contamination is not really a problem either way. I don't believe the media hype about the reactors for one second. Most people's ideas about nuclear energy/reactors come from disaster movies and other sci-fi sources. The media naturall...
