UPnP-capable NAT devices can have portmappings automatically added and removed, no username/password required. Windows has API functions for it, MSN and some windows filesharing programs use it, and DirectPlay will also automatically use it to open ports for DirectPlay games. I've seen some portmapp...

The link, as with all Blizzard files, its a downloader. Two proprietary-platform-dependant downloaders, don't forget. They are real assholes. I don't quite see the problem with simply serving it up through BitTorrent. Me, I'll be finding it somewhere else. Enjoy! Thanks. I know I'm being paranoid n...

SOW file? Hahaaa... that's long ago. The installation archives from Descent 1 and 2... I remember that these archives could be unpacked using ARJ. Anyway, for DXX-Rebirth installation it would be enough to ask for the D1/D2 directories (after looking in some default locations perhaps) and then eithe...

MS is always going to reign supreme as long as developers code for Windows only. Once some popular software begins being coded for Mac/PC/Linux I see Windows losing a bit of steam, especially if OEMs begin offering it as an option and it makes the PC cheaper. Yeah, but they don't code for OSX and G...

Yeah, I wonder if this might really be the end of M$'s monopoly on the desktop. People ended up taking all the crap when XP was launched, but I guess that was because they didn't see any other choice. Now, with Dell providing an alternative, and other vendors hopefully following suit, they might swi...

Oh, btw, about that Orbot stuff... In Forsaken, every enemy is a heavily armored Orbot. It blows. How's that? I found them to be no harder to take down than D3 bots, even on Hard difficulty. It's the D3 robots more than any others which rely on their size to be hard to hit, because of the accurate c...

Well, that's because D3 doesn't use the gamespy protocol for server queries, and Vortex simply ignores the region codes. I'm not aware of any other problems, and there are several servers with codes other than 0 and 7: ==> ./Von #19 FT40 (AC w FF)/location <== Northwest US/West Canada ==> ./[AUS] Se...

The ability to output a demo to a movie file I've done this a while ago, but there are some caveats and issues. I wrote some code for D1x-rebirth adding an option to output a stream of YV12 encoded images to a file (initially it pumped out tons of screenshots like D3 can do, but it put too much str...

I think Wine is also going to develop a DX10 API. Right now they have almost nothing to work with and it's still in a very early stage, but once (most of) the work has been done, and if all this DRM really causes that much overhead, Wine is probably going to run those DX10 games faster than Vista it...

So typical of GUI apps...
Perhaps it's better to disable the update checker and manually
check for update/security announcements occasionally.

Yeah, but I was mainly referring to printed documents. You can't just reformat them by resizing some window. And longer texts such as articles will have 4+ lines per paragraph anyway. TeX has other problems too (e.g. obscurity of error messages), but that doesn't mean its typesetting shouldn't be us...

From the post referenced by Topher: Every email and document does not need to be a literary work of art, it just needs to be easy to read. If you use Outlook and Word, you already get the benefits of a spell checker and auto-correct. There's something I should add here: spelling checkers and auto-co...
