Re: If it doesn't work well in Dos, use Rebirth or XL?

How to set up XL to best match DOS? It's been a little while... I'm not sure if you can change the points mid-screen thing. In "Misc" (I believe?) settings, you may be able to fix both of these things after setting "Expert Mode" to full then going on a wild goose chase all over t...

Re: If it doesn't work well in Dos, use Rebirth or XL?

I mainly use Rebirth, but that's simply because I have for a while. Before that, I was a big D2X-XL user. I still use XL sometimes. It really depends on what you are trying to do. I'd recommend trying a few levels of First/Counterstrike in both (and toying around with XL's options) and deciding base...

Re: Levels of the World & Anniversary Edition - any good ones?

Anyone know of any other good [non-LOTW] D1 missions or especially good single levels to try? Eris Rebellion is pretty OK. It's not the best mission in terms of quality, but it definitely beats 99% of LOTW. If I had one complaint, however, it's that it lacks a boss. Back to LOTW, Deep Jovian Mine i...

You probably are being too self-conscious about it. Convert the levels to narrative format as well as change some things to avoid copyright infringement and you could probably sell the thing :P

Re: Levels of the World & Anniversary Edition - any good ones?

Demon Bridge is fairly innovative.

Quick note: Beware the multitude of corrupted levels. There are also a few bad .MSN files - you just need a good idea of how to use Notepad (or equivalent) to fix these though.

Re: Top three to five custom missions

It doesn't have to be done in one sitting, however memorizing the "D2" section (and some of the "D1" section) is easier that way. If you're going to split the level up, I'd recommend tackling each section in one sitting. Unless you are rather good at memorizing levels. The most t...

Like too many ideas of how to handle a fight? Or is it the author cramming too many ideas into a level that you mean? I was getting too many ideas for my own levels/non-Descent things  I haven't had the pleasure of trying Apocalyptic Factor, but you've been so horrendously vague in your answer...

Re: Top three to five custom missions

TEW is a part of the DFW missions. As to whether Obsidian is better depends on what you are referring to. I'd say that they are on par geometrically - while AF is much more complex, each one is of high quality within its detail level. If that makes sense, which it probably doesn't. If you're talking...

I know that level has a door bug with the red door - that may be related. Normally using DLE to check for errors will auto-fix the issue. The issue in question may or may not be the same one that I'm referring though.

Re: [WIP] Descent 2 custom HAM/gameplay mod

You should give the Lou Guard guided missiles

As for D2X-XL, all it should take in theory is creating a folder in the exe-directory/mods folder called descent2 and copying the .HAM folder in there. If that doesn't work, put the .HAM in a mods/HOG-name-of-the-mission-you-want-to-play folder.

Re: Best old author/team

Sirius and Darkhorse did an independent venture for AF. Ellusion is/was a megagroup of people. Sirius and Darkhorse did level design, but I don't think that many of the graphics or robots were theirs IIRC. Sirius and Darkhorse also didn't seem to have a part in EAF2 - though I could be wrong.

Every time I launch it, it plays the cutscene, then I get a "Cannot open file merc1.d3l" (or something like that) error. I bought the game from GOG, but I don't have the installer anymore.

I have the first one, but the DMDB version (I think?) wasn't complete. The final level was just a string of rooms.

EAF2 was Ellusion's first mission, so that's why it's under their name. Keep in mind that this was back in the '90s ;)
