Re: Game Extractor

Ok, another question! The Descent 1 bosses seem to use three sounds in the first game. The perpetual ticking sound that we all love, the Class 1 Drone sound for seeing the player and the Medium Lifter sound periodically, so I assume it's set to the attacking sound. However, in Descent 2 things seem ...

Re: Descent 1 1/2

That's a bit complicated... But should work. I'll take a look now! Thanks a lot, Pumo. EDIT: Checked out those levels and indeed - they showcase the D1 palette very well. The WIP-status of the PIG aside, this really looks good. I really like the twist the D1 palette puts on D2 textures too. Not all ...

Re: Unofficial Unauthorized D2 Sound Patch (UUD2SP)

Version 1.1 with the updated fan sound is up. Enjoy.

Also, feel free to make suggestions for future versions. It's not like there's a lot to add, but there are still some unused sounds from D1 for example.which editors could find handy.

Sweet! Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'll be able to change the fan sound that way. I'll do it right away, actually.

EDIT: Done. Or course, credit has been given to you, Pumo, for explaining to me how to do it. Get the new file from the thread ^^

Thanks!

Also, see if you can find out how to answer my second question, the one about the fan texture sound. I'm not doing anything more today anyway, it's far too late and I'm going to sleep. The thread is actually up now, so you can download the files and see for yourself how they work.

Unofficial Unauthorized D2 Sound Patch (UUD2SP)

After much toil and many half-successful attempts, finally there's success! With priceless help and guidance from the omniscient Jeff250 I was able to complete quite a treat for all you Descent 1 fans who have always regretted the axing of so much audio content from Descent 2. Same here actually! Ok, we've got 3 votes in favor and I'm an impatient man, so I'll fix the .HAM file to use the original sound file. The poll is still open so everything can be reversed at a later date. EDIT: Actually forget it for now. The bitmap data in HAXMED32 is recorded in a very vague and u...

Re: Game Extractor

A new emergency, Jeff! I'm almost done with the file. Everything is set to be identical to D1, but I've hit one little snag. Namely, the sound file for the plasma driller apparently failed to load. "robot27.raw". It should occupy sound object #200, but this object apparently is the "C...

Re: HAXMED32 blocks my weapon changes?

The slightly less convenient method is to read the address of whatever value you wish to change from HAXMED32 and then jump to the address and edit it manually using a hex editor application. A few years ago I wanted to play some D2 single player, but also wanted to see what would have been if they...

HAXMED32 blocks my weapon changes?

This is weird - I'm positive I have successfuly made changes to weapons before. Also, I believe this HAXMED32 version that I am using is indeed cracked so it allows to edit Descent2.HAM at all. Why would it give a "data rejected" message all of the sudden, even when I try to change only so...

I'll be making a new thread posting the new .SXX files and Descent2.HAM when I'm done with the work. Which should be later today.

I'll make a version of the HAM file where only the sounds are accounted for, so it doesn't alter the gameplay.

Your preferred fan texture sound?

I mean the fan as in ventillator, air conditioning contraption. Although not a major issue, the sound of fans in Descent 2 has been replaced and the difference is noticeable. As with all ambient sounds, the sound choice of the fan does contribute to the atmosphere of the level. I learned how to add ...

Re: Descent 1 1/2

Good news from the technicalities front! With Jeff's guidance, I've overcome the final hurdle to reintroducing Descent 1 sounds to D2 at no expense to existing sounds. I don't think you understand what I'm suggesting. If sound element #78 is unused, then 1) Set (e.g.) a door to use sound element 78. 2) Then edit sound element 78 and change its sound from 255 to (e.g.) 183. Manually type the numbers in in either step if necessary. During step 2, ignore haxmedit's ...

Yeah, just use one of the unused sound elements. It looks like these elements' sound numbers are really just the ordinal position of their sounds in the *.sxx file (despite what haxmedit would lead you to believe). So to have one of the unused sound elements point to your first added sound, just ma...

Ok, my fear has been confirmed. The files are in the archive, they get recognized by DTX2, but as I thought, these files are "lost" to Haxmed32. As I mentioned earlier, Haxmed32 uses sound flags and sound objects. - you can assign the objects to the flags, and the flags themselves are used...

Re: Sound flags in Haxmed32 vs sound flags in DTX2?

I found out an interesting piece of trivia while browsing the DXX-Rebirth forums. ThugsRook suggested it there. In order to fix the files from Descent 2 which get sped up at 22 khz all you need to do is to re-save them as 8 bit mono 22500 hz using soundrec32. Of course it works. Funnily enough, you ...

Player Megas from robots don't do enough damage on Trainee

I have set for the last two bosses to have Player Megas as their weaponry, as opposed to Robot Megas. However, on Trainee the Megas do like 47 points of shield damage, even though the HAM file clearly states that they should do 199 damage on all difficulties. I compared this to Robot Megas on Traine...

The problem, to me, is that if you replace the door sounds, the smaller D1 portion of the mission (which I know is very important to you :P) will sound almost fine... but the D2 portion, which is larger, will have the door sounds completely screwed up -- and I can't see the D1 sounds fitting with m...

Guided missiles also create strategies that wouldn't happen in D1, especially if you introduce them in a place where there's no other reason to use them.
