Hi guys, if you're looking for more software here's some stuff if you want to try it out:

LMMS: https://lmms.io/download/#windows
VST plugins: http://www.vst4free.com/
Soundfonts: http://www.hammersound.net
Audacity:http://audacityteam.org/

LMMS is an open source DAW (FLStudio clone), VST plugins are instruments and effects, you can load them with the Vestige plugin in LMMS. SF2 files are general midi soundfont banks for old sound cards, but you can load them with SF2 player plugins. These are sampled instruments like pianos, strings, guitars that sort of thing. LMMS has one built-in but there is another called SFZ Soundfont player, you can find it at vst4free. Audacity is an audio editor that can be used to convert between formats (ogg, mp3, wav etc.) and to edit ID3 tags.

Not yet, since Descent 1&1/2 still has a ways to go and I want this to coincide. There will be one eventually but I'll give you all plenty of notice.
I thought it would be a good idea to give everyone plenty of time because I know how slow this community can be to react to new projects.

I quickly react to new projects. Only I like to make mixes. Here's another mix I made for myself. Making original music I still lazy.

Pretty cool. You should open your own thread for these; they're too good to be posted in the thread for a project they won't end up being used in.

Thank you for your flattering opinion :) But I think a separate thread, it would be too pretentious for my modest capabilities

sigma, if only high quality meida was allowed to be posted here, in the gallery, I wouldn't be allowed to post my art.

If I understood correctly what was said Alter Fox earlier, it is impossible to place and also the tracks of high quality. You should send them to him at his e-mail.
I posted here this mix just because Alter Fox reproached us that we don't want to do anything. Creating mixes is also one of the ways of finding the right theme to create original music for the album (at least for me, since I have no talent as a composer by nature).

It actually needs to be sent via PM, and this is important, because my junk filter is very overzealous and I may not get your email at all. It's happened before...
Apart from that detail you've got the right idea.

Just make sure to follow the instructions when you submit, it's gonna help me not lose track of things over however long this goes on for.

Another double post... well, this is my thread dammit! :D

Just wanted to point out that you guys don't need to stick to a "default" 4/4 time signature; I think it would be nice if the gameplay could have a few songs -- or parts of songs -- that were done in 6/4 or or even some of the weirder time signatures. It's not an obligation or anything like that; but I've noticed people often don't think of this -- me included!
So best put it up here while it's fresh in my mind.

That's a pretty neat idea. Some years ago a made a 5/4 song for my Greatest Odyssey project, but has not experimented with that since then.

Will make a new song with a weird signature then! :D

Off Topic: It's interesting that Skinny Puppy tends to stick to just 4/4 even in a genre that seems to promote playing around with that. The only times I've seen them change it up at all were on the Descent 2 soundtrack and one album that was released about the same time.

BTW Due to minimal internet access, the song that I was making in AudioSauna is probably not gonna be finished. But don't worry! I'll whip something in Acid 2.0, no doubt...

I have one pretty sweet song in the works, but I'm almost certain I won't make it before the deadline. It was never intended to be Descent-related either.

Doesn't have to be. And there is no deadline as of now cuz I know this community moves at a nearly geological pace. :P

Experimenting with sound of old descent music if anyone is interested,,, I mean I want to do something for this but haven't tried doing original stuff in this style yet.

d.facdn.net/art/phozon/music/1455052732/1455052732.phozon_descentmusicstyle.wav

(this is sounds from scratch, and finding various Roland drum samples).

Hi Phozon, sounds good :)

I contacted Kensingon to ask if they would release the GUS samples in the public domain.
Kensington bought Gravis in 97, I was told that the message has been forwarded to their legal team,
if they give the go ahead I'll post the banks here.

Seems they aren't interested, it shouldn't be a problem to recreate with FM synths or other GM banks
If you want to go really old school check out this OPL3 VSTi: :D

Atm I'm trying to figure out how the D2 redbook tracks were made,
to find similar effects, synths, guitar presets etc.

Here's what it sounds like so far, this isn't for the album, just for fun.
The original track is also in the mix, some sounds would be difficult to replicate without knowing what they used.

I think if you reduce the tempo by 17% it sounds better (I mean Are You Descent)

Doom 3 BFG edition comes with the GUS bank for the original two games, I wonder if it's possible to extract. I have been able to get it to work with Timidity.

Cool VST. I just had to use it for a type of song that wasn't around back in the DOS days. :D

I know there's no deadline, but I'd like to craft one more song for this before it's published.

It would be helpful if I could have your tracks in WAV, just to make sure the audio quality is as good as possible.

I'm building an electronic drum kit, here are the first two tests:

Thanks, I might not get round to finishing it, will keep it in mind when starting something new.

Would like to hear it, LMMS has a plugin called patman that can open gus patches. I tried a VST wrapper to load it in FL but it only works with effects. I haven't been able to find out anything from Kensington so the legal status is still unclear, looks like abandonware.

Well if nothing else you can use LMMS to render audio and then work with that.
I might want to try.

Also you quoted me as the wrong person.
We should probably get at least somewhat back on topic here.

I thought a long time, but better than this is for single Descent into techno - industrial - etc - arrangement is difficult to come up with, in my opinion. To my great regret, I came to the conclusion that I can not do a worthy remix (even for amateur album) quite professionally (or good, as I would like to do it).

P.S. Although I really like and the original :)

Thanks Sigma. If you change your mind we can maybe make some material available to you. There are also sites like loopmasters that sell content for DJs if you want to incorporate that or use it in other mixes. I can't speak for everyone but if you want to use any of the tracks I've posted for the album or to SoundCloud for a remix you can do that. If others give their consent then you could maybe try making a mix with the album tracks, should this be something that interests you. There are also many tracks licensed CC-BY on SoundCloud like these: https://soundcloud.com/global-sound-promotion (click on the creative commons license to see what licencing is used) - Most of these allow remixing so if you use material like this you could publish legally under the same license if that is required. In the case of the album tracks, or mine at least just say that its a remix and tracks used with permission with a link back to the stream. I'll consider posting more CC-BY stuff in the future if there is interest. A little late but Merry Christmas.

Of course, there's always a interest. For example, free sample libraries, or something like that. But I'm not a musician, my hobby only mixes.
It seems you only have one Christmas day as a Christmas party, but in Russia these holidays four.
With best wishes for the New Year holidays! )

Just a heads up, Descent 1&1/2 has reached the halfway point for level submissions so I'll be deciding on that closing date pretty soon -- if you've signed up and not made anything yet you may wanna make some time to get on that.
