Maybe you don't have the correct level. It's Descent Vignettes level 24.

Since I tried the D1 level in D2X-R, I should have gotten a warning about an invalid format and went on my way rather than D2X simply closing.

Was this recorded in D2X-XL by any chance?

If I'm reading this right (didn't watch the demo yet) this is something I've seen very occasionally in all versions of Descent 1 and 2 on my last two computers. Slightly more often in XL but IIRC not enough that it should come down to anything but the sample size. Most often it's phoenix and omega cannon shots but I've seen it with quite a few other things. I did remember seeing it noticeably more often before the last time I reinstalled D2X-XL.

Try a reinstall with a new pilot and new config file and see if that helps. Back up the old ones so you can copy them over if it does and see whether one of them is somehow causing it. :P
