Please don't host levels w/o auto-download links

Post by WarAdvocat »

It's not hard to add them - and the level maker should have inserted them in the first place. Let's not encourage this kind of sloppiness.

=)

At the very least you can insert the autolink yourself.

If you're referring to my server running Hatseput's \"Sombréfrost\", I didn't know the level didn't have auto-download links.

(Auto-download links added.)

Not to mention hosting levels with broken links

or email addresses as links...um hello

I seem to have a better workout dodging your stupidity than attempting to grasp the weight of your intelligence.

newer levers, sure; but were older levels are concerned, links WILL break. sites disappear. Like I made a couple that Zappa used to host. That's LONG gone. There are many level builders no longer active so updating the links within the game files will be a bit daunting.

Question. Will changing the auto load links make game files incompatible? Can server hosts host the levels as well?

that's a good question Duper - and you make some good points - Unfortunately I don't have an answer.

Foil yours was the straw that broke the camel's back - but there were at least 2 others in the preceding couple days that came up. The one with the email was one of them, and there was another with no links...

Then there are the ones where no auto download links work, yeah =)

Duper, no, it won't make them non-compatible, provided that's all you change.

Some of the great folks over at Server Ops have adjusted almost all of the old popular levels with new links, and recommended those running said levels update to the new ones for a better experience for all.

But not every server op has updated to these said files

these files would only include links to the following servers for auto downloads

http://d3.koolbear.com/dl/xxxxx.zip
http://www.descent3fischlein.de/levels/xxxxx.zip
http://www.dfiles.de/download/d3/missions/xxxxx.zip
http://www.descentforum.net/missions/xxxxx.zip
ftp://ftp.pooterman.com/descent3/levels/xxxxx.zip

Sombrefrost is also available at http://www.prepare4descent.net/d3/missi ... t/scat.zip

I inserted this before I moved it from his DescentiaPedia page, apparently Foil had grabbed it before I did so.

Two questions, though,
1) Does the link require 'http://' or will it work without? (I added both just in case)
2) Will it work if the level is in a rar? I am guessing not so I put it in a zip.

BTW, anyone is welcome to use DescentiaPedia to host a level page, put some screenies in the zip with the level and use the file upload feature, then let me know and I will extract and move so you can use the screenies on your DescentiaPedia page. For Beta testing a level or mod you can just use the file upload and pass the link to those you want in on the beta.

Is there a thread somewhere where we can post levels that we find without links? on DF.de maybe?

Yes sure! The right place would be in the players embassy section of the ServerOps forum over at : http://www.descentforum.net/ServerOps

Please make sure you include the exact Mission name and Server name this occurs for.

The fix is ready now and currently beeing tested. I will release it later today if there have not been any reports about problems and pass it to the serverops.

A fix for 704 missions by a 255 KB file has been released today. I'd like to encourage all server operators to read this thread and install the fix:

http://www.descentforum.net/ServerOps/v ... .php?t=492

This fix is ONLY for D3 ServerOps (including occasional game hosters) but not for players (as it makes no sense at all for them).

Thanks for your interest...
