D2X-XL Won't Start

I purchased and downloaded both Descent 1 and Descent 2 from GOG and was able to set up both Rebirth versions without a problem. But then, after I set up D2X-XL exactly how it says in the installation guide, it gives the notices that Descent 1 levels won't be available because I hadn't put any Descent 1 data in that folder. Fine by me, I just wanted to be sure it ran.
So I hit Okay, then another notice pops up saying that the .HOG and .PIG files were invalid, and that I need the full version to run D2X-XL. This is the full version lol. Help?

I don't know anything about the GOG version they offer, but from what I've read. The demo files also come with the full version.

So maybe look for another set of HOG and PIG files and compare the file sizes. The larger files would most likely be the full version.

Otherwise, try reading through this thread and see if this helps.

That thread actually did help. Thanks!

So here lies my next issue: I have D2X-XL installed and ready to go, complete with a shortcut on my desktop. However, whenever I try to create a pilot, it says something like \"Unable to create pilot. Access Denied.\" I have a feeling that has something to do with folder permissions, but I'm not entirely sure. How can I make it so it can create a pilot?

Try running it as administrator.

That worked! Thanks!
I like the \"new\" look D2X-XL has, but I can see why some people like the classic look that Rebirth has. I'll be switching between the two often. :P

Do you have D2X-XL installed under Program Files? I'd wager that would be what causes the issues writing files... but I'm not really sure whether there's a good way to fix it since Windows Vista/7 normally protect that folder via UAC.

I can cope with running it as admin though. Now if there was a way to run as admin by default... That'd be pretty cool lol

If I did that would I have to create a new shortcut or just use my current one?

Well the old shortcut won't point to the new directory....

Whatever is easiest for you? Just update the shortcut's info to the new directory or create new ones.
