D2X w32 sound problem

(I didn't post this in the bug report thread because this is not about any apparent bug in the program)

I get a constant "crackling" sound in DX2 v. 1.48
whenever any weapons are fired. This is present
regardless of what sound detail settings I use.
I haven't noticed this in any other Descent game
including D1x

I have AC97 onboard sound and tried both the cmedia
v2.048 and realtek v377 drivers. Before I have to
buy a new sound card, is there any way to get rid of this "crackling" noise I have been getting?
