Swear Filter

Post by Beowulf »

The new swear filter is retarded. If you've gotta have one, might as well just put the little asterisks...its better than changing the words to euphemisms because that really gets old quick...and I think the swear filter should be completely disabled in NHB. Those are just my opinions, but the NHB isnt meant for good wholesome conversation anyway and people are forewarned before joining.

Unless the BB is modified, disabling the swear filter in a particular forum is not possible.

swear filter

Actually I think the swear filter should add the following:

barf
booger
poo
darn

and these should randomly replace swear words.

I was referring to specific forums in the overall board =P.

For reference, that was pointed at Beowulf's comment about turning off the swear filter for the NHB only.

Vindy, PM me the workaround, please (oh, the ethical dilemma!). It's sorta like having a gun in the house; I doubt I'll ever use it but it's reassuring to know it's there. :D The irony is that the moment I can pummel someone into swearing at me strictly through the use of logic, humor and wit is a moment of triumph for me.

swear filter...

Post by Lothar »

I much prefer the replacements to be funny words instead of *****'s.

I figure, if people can't star out or otherwise self-censor their own swear words, the board should make them look silly. It's a training mechanism -- people realize the swear filter makes their swear words turn into silly little kid words (which, 99% of the time, is entirely appropriate) so they censor themselves and we don't have to worry about it. And for those who don't learn, we get to laugh at them for saying "poopie" so much ;)

i think thats fine for the public forums, but you have to be of age to read the NHB, correct? and if you don't want to read swear words than a forum named No Holds Barred isn't for you anyway.

Right now it's more like Some Holds Barred

I have a feeling whoever put stuff into the swear filter does not know how it actually works. Words are only being censored when they stand alone. I just saw one case in the NHB.

In order to censor words that are part of other words, you need to add *'s on BOTH SIDES of the word. This will also catch the word as it stands alone (I tested this).

Though apparently it will take out the entire word in this case. In my tests, BS spelled out changed to **** (I'm doing this on a different forum mind you).

Apparently somebody seems to forget there are words such as assassin and cockpit.

Of course I'm biased since I think the whole word censor thing is stupid anyway.

Sorry, lars, I don't speak Danish. I was just making a silly point about swear filters discriminating against those who swear in English. (But I did choose Danish knowing at least one DBB member, you, might get a kick out of it. :))

Point taken Bash, I have always found these filters to be a bit single minded/silly (English only). Just like when people talk about posting something (more or less bad) at night in chat etc. (there is no night on the internet)
Oh and it was funny should I translate it, (it would be a lot of *'s hehe :) )

It would be interesting to see if the translation I have is correct, lars. *You smell like old rotten cheese that your mom had up her azz*. The site I got it from lists swearing in 150 languages and their English equivalents. Some of them were so ridiculously absurd I have a difficult time imagining anyone could actually say them with a straight face, but maybe the translator just botched it.

This was my second choice:

*Jeg lægger dig ned og lægger en lort på maven af dig!*

Which is translated as, *I'll lay you down and place a turd on your belly.* Does that really upset your average Dane? :o

And those words are the reason the censor works the way it does. These are examples of words where putting a * on both sides of the word wouldn't be useful. However, for other words, like BS, it should probably be done that way.

Actually, the PD swear filter censors cockpit partially, which is quite annoying.

Okay, she's holding a Walther in another picture I have. I did find a picture of that particular gun, but I can't read the side so I have no idea what it is. http://www.kamineko.org/up/GSG15L.jpg
