Retrovirus Beta!

Beta should be available tomorrow. The game is playing extremely well. You will be able to buy the Beta directly from Cadenza Interactive, and upgrade free to the final game when it goes gold. That should be on or about the 12th December is my understanding.

Enjoy! :)

And I assume that those of us who preordered already still get the beta and the final release?

When did it happen that you had to pay for a beta?

When preordering gave you beta access.
Nadeo/Ubisoft probably started that particular trend.

I should know better than to get into this, but I have another example of prior art: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Public_Beta

Minecraft originally had you paying for its alpha, not to mention the beta, and I think things worked out all right for Mojang.

And sweet, Cadenza put the project up on Steam Greenlight. (For the unaware, it's a fairly-new feature Valve implemented that lets the Steam community vote on new titles to be added to the service.) Everyone with an account should upvote the hell out of it. I've pretty much bankrupted my checking account this month, but now that Cadenza has the game on sale directly via their site, I'll have to see if I can scrape up enough.

(Just a thought, but I think it's high time that Retrovirus gets its own dedicated folder. And let's not bury it in the Other 6DOF section, either. :P)

I certainly hope they are. You have to admire them for thinking so far ahead.

I'll do this eventually, but probably not till a while after the final game ships. (I kinda prefer the extra visibility it gets in the cafe for now.)

Right you are, Ken!

Anyone who has purchased any version of the game gets the Beta and the full game also. I am still the only person running a dedicated server, so someone in the USA hosting too, would be much appreciated. The install package comes with a dedicated server app.

Due to the anti-lag hybrid P2P/CS netcode, you can still play the game at 200ms and use the hit-scan rifle, without having to lead, but it'd be nice to have another server up.

It looks like a good buddy of mine, who used to be the corporate voice for SKY TV here in NZ, is going to perform the role of the Multiplayer announcer. That is going to be weird! But cool!

Does the dedi server require a purchase? If not, and the dedi doesn't hog too much cpu, I can probably get the Descent Retirement Home server hosting a US-based dedi.

The update is available but Gamestop thinks I haven't preordered yet (I have), and it removed the game from my library...
EDIT: And I did some ridiculous complicated things which involved for one thing installing two copies of the gamestop app at once and now it works again. Still no framerate improvement, but I hear they're working on that currently. Still, lots more levels to be barely able to play. XD

The Dedicated server is a stand-alone app, but it is only 49KB in size, so it requires the rest of the installation to work.

Foil: check your PMs.

The release date has changed, not because of any slip in the schedule, or any problems whatsoever. Cadenza's research has shown that indie-games released before Christmas get buried in the massive wave of big-name games which hit the shelves at that time. So the team will have the game ready ahead of Christmas, and take a well-deserved holiday, before the game officially ships - presumably mid-January.

A full Steam release while occur simultaneously.

If you are purchasing the game, please buy it directly from Cadenza, at http://cadenzainteractive.com/buy-retrovirus/ as, obviously, they make more money if you do that. And I think we are all agreed we want Cadenza to do well out of Retrovirus.

Still cant get this to work, even after the update. (yes, I've asked the devs, followed all their suggestions, etc.)
I think it has something to do with Gamestops launcher.
Hopefully Steam will fix this issue.

The intro looks good...

I dunno.. the idea of buying a beta isn't sitting well with me. It's like buying a car that doesn't have a steering wheel, brake pedal or any climate control and being told they'll be in the final version.

That's equivalent to saying you're buying a car you can't drive, where this beta can be played.

A better analogy would be a chess game without knights or rooks.

Making an alpha/beta available for sale has become a fairly-common practice, at least over the past couple of years. As I mentioned before, Minecraft was released this way to enormous success.
