Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is out!

So for those of you on the fence about upgrading, now's the time. SP1 isn't a major change, just all the previous security fixes and such. Still handy to have, if you wanted to do a fresh install of your OS.

btw, if you do download from the MS download center, you will have to run the genuine checker program to generate the hash code for verification.

Get it via Windows Update, it's a dynamic d/l -- no need to load the whole thing. On the 4 W7 machines I updated so far it was 60-80MB (still took a looong time to install tho.)

For most people, that's fine. For system builders, it's kinda handy to have on a flash drive, just to save time downloading it. (You'd be amazed how many people around here, don't have broadband...) That, and you can just slipstream it, and not even have to worry about downloading, or installing anything.

Yes, I know. Like you said, "for most people WU is fine" -- that's your audience. System builders get MSDN disks :P

My system @ work seemed to slow down a little bit after I installed it.

I'll be doing a fresh install with a slipstreamed version this weekend, wonder if it will work better.

I'm still using Windows XP Pro right now, it runs fine. I'm not sure if I could get and install Windows 7 on my computer.

WinXP isn't dying yet. Or yes.

Don't know if it was a fluke or what - my work system seems fine now. Could have been a bad day :)

I installed it this afternoon on a Compaq machine that dual boots Win 7 and openSUSE 11.3. Installation initially failed with a 0×800f0a12 error. This error has already been noted in a number of forums/blogs:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/quick-fi ... rrors/3040
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get- ... s-7-a.html

As noted on these sites, the quick fix is to "use Windows Disk Management to set the System Reserved partition as active; if there’s no System Reserved partition, set the Windows volume as active" and then install Win 7 SP1. The problem comes after you do this and you try to recover your GRUB loader. The key is to follow the general advice in the openSUSE post and make sure you have the partition info or MBR backed up beforehand so you can restore it after the Win 7 SP1 upgrade.

In my case, I just followed most of the instructions on this page:

http://theopensuseblog.wordpress.com/20 ... s-install/

Instead of booting from a Live CD, I boot from the openSUSE 11.3 DVD and select the Rescue System option. When I get to the Rescue login, I log in as root and start the "grub" procedure outlined on the page above, and all is back to normal.

Installed a slipstreamed version of Ultimate, seems to run great.

Of course, this desktop is a powerhouse too...

Installed it and it's running without any problems in my dual-boot Win7-WinXP on my desktop computer. :)

Will install it on my sister's netbook later (that BTW, runs Win7 perfectly!)

Cool! I'd like to try that whenever I buy a Windows 7 Ultimate.
