I would like to watch my VCR through my laptop. Is that possible?

I wouldn't advise it. Find one that supports Firewire and you're in business, but honestly unless it has a tuner built in then its not worth the money spent trying to make it work.

Why firewire? USB 2.0 is faster.

No it's not. Plus, most video gear uses Firewire anyway.

USB is quite a bit slower when you factor in the overhead traffic. Going from USB to Firewire would be like going from 10Mbps to 100Mbps a network.
