CD drawer opening by itself

CD drawer opening by itself

A friend has a Gateway with a HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B drive that won't stay closed, empty or w/ a CD in it.

Have tried to install a GCE8160BFirm201.exe driver I found but no help and also checked for viruses.

Any other ideas?

Check for more viruses.

yup, sounds like a hack job to me. I was playing an online game with someone a number of years ago and that started happening. the guy hacked into the game chat and started typing obscenities. :roll:

Hell, there is/was a plugin for admins to do that to players on DoD servers. Fun little practical joke.

If it only happens in Windows, yeah, check for viruses, etc. If it also happens during boot-up or in the BIOS, for example, then the drive is probably bad.
