DVD-ROM quit working

Post by thewolfe »

I have a Dell Inspiron - 530 running Windows 7 which has an Asus DRW-2481ST DVD-RW that quit working and Windows does not see it.

I changed it out with a new one, no joy.
I replaced the cable, no joy.
I tried the DVD software that came with it, "Device driver was not successfully installed."
I removed the device from the Device Manager, no joy.
I search for a new driver in Device Manager, no joy.

Also, the Device Mgr does see it.

Tried to install the driver using Asus utility and got the following message "No matched drive detected".

Any ideas?

Does the drive show in BIOS?
Does the drive activity light blink when you turn on the PC?
Does the tray open and close?

If the system is using an Intel chipset, run the Intel inf update utility and reinstall all the chipset drivers. Also make sure the port isn't disabled in bios (also a good way to verify the drive is working properly is to boot from a linux live CD).

Chipset stuff is a little out of my expertise. Can you show me where I should go to download them or what their names are.

I have access to Dell's site and have my Service tag number that gets me somewhat there but I'm not sure what to look for to download.

The Intel inf update utility would be on Intel's website:

In device manager, hit view --> show hidden devices. Are there any hidden/non-plug and play devices that aren't functioning properly? And what is the complete error message in device status on the DVD drive?

I just tried this http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerr ... -error.htm

I tried #6 "Delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in the registry"
and it WORKED!!!!!!

Getting me to the code 10 error put me on the right path.

Couldn't have gotten close without your help.

Thanks & blessings Krom.

Oh and one more question. Any idea what the reg tweak actually did or why the problem occurred in the first place....you are a able to put your finger beside your temple and discern why my problem occurred?

Driver corruption, probably caused by malware or some off brand DRM.

Backup all files and reinstall windows. Install all drives and updates. Does it work now?
