Mt. Saint Helens just went kaboom.

Post by Top Wop »

They had a webcam, but right after it started it was taken offline. Last I saw there was smoke coming from the top.

I hit refresh too soon, now I cant get the image back.

Edit: further proof to show you that im not crazy :P

What is the purpose of having a webcam if you take it offline when the action starts?

yup.. a load of steam and a little bit of ash.

The smart people with spendy toys say this is a small precursor. We'll have to see.

More US Volcanoes: 5 in Hawaii (mantle convective hotspot), 11 in the Cascade range (subducting plate zone), 43 in Alaska (another subducting plate zone).

Other extremely cool natural stuff in the US: Yellowstone, the Glaciers of Alaska, the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, the Redwood Forests, the Sequoia Forests, Yosemite, Death Valley, the Rocky Mountains, Dinosaur Monument, the Grand Tetons, the Everglades, the Florida Keys, Craters of the Moon, Hells Canyon, Mammoth Caves, The Great Lakes, Niagra Falls, Acadia, Cape Cod & the Islands, the Mississippi River, Glacier Park, the Badlands, White Sands, Crater Lake, the Columbia River Gorge, Big Bend, Bryce & Zion, Arches & Canyonlands, the Appalacian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, the Olympics, the Virgin Islands.

It always surprises me how amazing the US's geography is: one of the most spectacular and varied on the planet. In the last 10 years I've visited New Zealand, Australia, and Iceland - all spectacular places, but there's no type of features in those places that you can't get in the US, and then some. The advantages that NZ and Iceland have are their compactness; all the features are very proximal. The advantage the Australia has is, let's face it, the Great Barrier Reef (our reefs pale in comparison for diving).

Sorry to get preachy, but I'm extremely proud of the US's natural wonders.

Lol that reminds me of a pic I have of Iceland. Sea, black sand beach, plains, a waterfall, mountains, and a glacier all in one shot :) It was awesome.

We have the lowest point in the Northern Western Hemisphere, called Badwater in Death Valley, at -280 feet, or 85 meters. Death Valley is the hottest place on earth as well. Unique lifeforms live there that don't exist anywhere else in the world such as the Pupfish, who have adapted to life in an extreme saline environment. There is a place called Stovepipe Wells, noted from the historical fact that someone planted a stove pipe in the ground to mark the location of the well in the desert. Scotty's Castle exists at the northern end of the park. Indeed, there is a rich history here, and this is just one National Monument.

I've included a few pictures that I took when I visited years ago. These are some of the very first photographs I've ever taken. On the last image I drew a line to better help you visualize where the sea level would be if Death Valley were flooded from the Ocean:

P.S. These are only three of 22 pictures of Death Valley. If there's interest, I can post more, such as images of Devil's Golf Course, mud flats with stone trails, the sand dunes, Artist's Palette, a natural pigmentation of rock and sand on the side of a mountain, as well as a Hotel Oasis.

Here are six pictures that I took of Mt. Saint Helens back in 1989. As you can see, it has been steaming up quite abit back then as well. These images are noteworthy because they show how much devastation there was even nearly a decade after the eruption. As you can see, the dome is barely visible over the crater rim. Nowadays its grown quite abit.

Once again, these images were taken more than a decade ago, and these are NOT pictures of the eruption we just had.

I hope Mt Saint Helens explodes enough to cause the demise of Microsoft! Muahahahahaha...

I gotta add the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, that place is awesome. You know what would be awesome in another part of the world, Great Snow Dunes...I've love to snowboard on that! :D

You also forgot Carlsbad Caverns, which reminds me, I gotta check that out sometime...

And speaking of the Rocky Mountains, it's insane how long the range really goes...all the way from Alaska to the tip of S America.

Lobber. Badwater is the lowest place in the Western Hemisphere but not in the Northern Hemisphere. Theres a place about 1000ft lower.

I want to say it's on in New Zealand.

And doing a quick Google for "dino volcano", it's White Island Crater in New Zealand. :) Wonder how he's holding up these days?

I got the white island crater too, but no webcam, or mention of it there, I figured I had the wrong spot.

Nope, nope, tried again...
