But if really there were irrefutable signs of imminent eruption, such as circular cracks of the earth's crust around the future epicenter, you'll just look at them and wait for the inevitable death?
The main sign that Yellowstone is close to an eruption will be indicated by the ground bulging upward as magma pushes towards the surface. That's what happened during the May 1980 Mt. Saint Helens volcano eruption in Washington State. The mountain's side had been being pushed upward for months by the magma beneath it prior to the eruption. One day, the slope finally became too steep and the whole thing slid down in a huge landslide, which then released the pressurized magma chamber in a spectacular explosion. The man taking these pictures died when the hot ash overtook his position 10 miles away.

I'm sure glad the wind was blowing towards the NE when it happened, or the Willamette Valley would have looked like it did in Yakima and Spokane Washington, a dust covered nightmare.

But think, if we had a huge volcanic eruption, the airborne ash would blot out the sun and put the earth into a new age of climate cooling. Siberia, Antarctica and the Arctic would refreeze again and solve our rising ocean problem, negating that man-made climate change problem.

There isn't much point to being alarmed if Yellowstone is going to erupt or not, since there is currently absolutely nothing we could do about it even if we could put a date on it.

This might interest sigma. Russia seems to be blessed in having few earthquakes, although there are quite a few in those island chain areas along the eastern coastal subduction zone. Mainland Russia seems free of earth movements, except in those old Soviet Republics.
Thank you. But in Russia, every schoolboy knows the map of lithospheric plates, tectonic faults, earthquakes and volcanic activity. Tectonics studied the lessons in geography.

You guys had the Tunguska Event in Siberia in 1908, which was speculated to be a comet that exploded with the force of 10 to 15 megatons of TNT and flattened trees for 770 square miles! Currently here in the northwest (more specifically Oregon) scientists have been watching "Sisters". a triple peak mountain/dormant volcano. there has been increased bulging at its center for the last 10 years or so. Using satellite, they've measured something like 4 inches a year or better. I haven't heard anything for several years.
