What are your thoughts about a 10 yr old buying an I-Touch.
My step-daughter wants to save her money and buy one but my g/f and I believe she is to young.

My friend uses his to download porn. I'm not sure if you can keep it from doing that.

dude.. a 10 y/o girl d/l pron??!

Merlin, i agree. too young. there is no good reason that most 10 y/o NEED a cell phone, much less an iPhone, or any media player. As a matter of want, i think it's a bad choice. DS's for that matter too.

She ahs a cell phone to talk to her dad that he bought. She has an I-pod. She has a DS. But we both agree an I Tuoch is not for her. She onyl wants one because her friend has one, her half-sister has one and she thinks it's cool because of the games they had on it. She wants to pay for it but we won't let her. She doesn't realize it's not wi-fi everywhere. She doesn't realize you have to pay for stuff, etc. Just wanted more input form other people.

It might be ok to get a kid spoiled by the time she's 12. Parents ahve to be responsible in makign sure that kids dont' always get what they want. If she was 14+ I'd have no problems but at 10 she doesn't understand everything yet.

I'd be worried about sending or receiving sex-texts.

A 10 year old with an iTouch? No. I agree with you, Merlin. She is too young. I barely had my own computer (but no Internet) when I was that age.

My 10 year old was asking at supper just yesterday why most of the kids in his class, or even younger, had cell phones that they played games on all day.

She doesn't take her phone to school. She has it to call her dad or when she's left at home for a short period of time to call or text us.

I don't believe a 10 year old has any use for an I touch.

Best take that money she has, and have her buy her own savings bond or something.

She al;ready spent 100 on a stuffed animal and a DS game. We both knew she would not be able to save 200+ dollars.

and she won't if you don't teach her how...

per month??? She's 10 Flip, not 25. ;)
Remember that the package with those rigs is not cheap; it's not Just the phone.

no. plain and simple. she has enough already.

I'm tending to agree with basically everyone here. She does not need an iPod Touch because she is too young and she has enough already. I'd get her a Sony Walkman that plays tapes though!

Too young for an iTouch ? How so ? Last time I checked they didn't come w/ a minimum age.. Up to the parents to teach using it.

Leave it to an immigrant to point out to you people that were raised here, "Hey, take some kinda leadership position, and teach yer yung un's to be responsible." LMAO!

Grendal, you have to limit what a child has or else they end up becoming spoiled and if they ever don't get what they want, they become very irritated and hard to handle. We teach her sharing and good use of her money. We stopped her from buying 2 stuffed animals and she was happy because later in the day she bought a DS game which she really wanted.

It's our place to make sure that she becomes the best woman she can and that involves raising her to be smart with her money and not wasting it on frivilous things like an I touch at 10 yrs old.

Heh, If a Ipod touch isn't for a 10 year old ,who is it for? Get one, jailbreak it, block at the router and let the kid be a kid.

You have much to learn, grasshopper.

You seem to have figured it all out -- you were asking for thoughts why again ?

Grendal, we don't have it all figured out and I asked because I wanted input. I'm a first time parent so most of this is new to me and I want to learn anything I can from other parents.

At least I'm active in my kids life unlike so many dead beat parents these days.

I think there's a way to lock out the wireless feature.

so if you can do that, I don't think you have to worry about porn or anything.

You can use this as an oppourtunity to teach her how to prioritize her money. If she wants to buy an Itouch, let her but tell her exactly what the games cost, what the download fees are, etcetra.

If she wants it bad enough, she'll have to learn that she has to pay for everything.

You can tell the phone company to lock down the internet, but I think that is only if you get to the internet via the cell towers. At least that's what I think happens, but it can be locked.

 EDIT: Then assign your network a WEP key so she can't get in.

Ugh... I Can't believe I missed that.

Thanks Cuda.

Still, I think it's a bit pricey for a 10 year old. Not to mention just a lot more than a kid needs. Get her a shuffle and call it good. ;)

She has her whole life to get one and besides in ten years or so, bluetooth will come out with a decent window attachment to do all that with voice activation.

Yes yes, but she wants to play games on it. A shuffle wouldn't let you do that. :P

I don't think a 10 year old would need iTouch anyways.

The DS should be plenty enough for games and stuff.

....and just for the record, the iTouch 3.x software comes with parental control. ;)

Merlin,

I just skimmed this thread so forgive me if this has already been mentioned.

I'd consider the ADD factor. Kids these days have so many ways to \"get entertainment right now\" that they can't focus. Anytime they get bored they'll flip to another channel, play a different videogame, etc. I've noticed that anytime I get tired of focusing or concentrating I open up my iPhone and play a game. I now have trouble sitting through my lectures at school and it hurts my performance. I honestly don't think I've sat more than 20 minutes in class without playing on my phone. I really do think electronics can contribute towards ADD.

I definitely blame my iPhone (among other things) for my inability to concentrate.

Money, yeah she gets bored extremely fast. Car ride to badminton and she's bored. It's a 2 min ride. She always has to have something to do. Can't just sit and enjoy the ride etc.

Well, she won't get one unles her dad buys her one. Which we have no control over. He lets her watch Family Guy which we think is to adultish for her. He has no concern for her at all.

If he does get one, then trust me I will lock it done and it won't go to school or a friends house because I'm sure it would get broken. Her cell phone stays home. At school, they have our numbers.
