Just started watching it for the first time.

How did this show ever get canceled after only one season?

Yeah it is a great show. Don't forget to watch Serenity after you finish the show to wrap up the storyline.

From wikipedia:

The Onion A.V. Club cited several actions by the Fox network that contributed to the show's failure, most notably airing the episodes out of sequence, making the plot more difficult to follow. For instance, the double episode "Serenity" was intended as the premiere, and therefore contained most of the character introductions and back-story. However, Fox decided that "Serenity" was unsuitable to open the series, and "The Train Job" was specifically created to act as a new pilot. In addition, Firefly was promoted as an action-comedy rather than the more serious character study it was intended to be, and the showbiz trade paper Variety noted Fox's decision to occasionally preempt the show for sporting events.

Great show... but the movie...errr.... well... let me know once you've seen it, because I don't want to spoil it. Though, I'm sure the problem will be self explanatory.

Strange, I loved the movie and so did so many others I know. I can't imagine what problem it might have. It wrapped up the story in a logical way and didn't end in the typical Hollywood cookie-cutter way. Two great things I can think of!

Bought the series.

I've seen the movie... I don't exactly know what problem you're referring to.

One of my favorite modern sci-fi series, and my wife (not a sci-fi fan, per se) loved it as well. For anyone here who hasn't seen it, it's highly recommended.

For me it felt like 3 seasons worth of story smashed into one movie. I really wish Joss Whedon would have just picked up were the story left off, rather than try to get it all in one go. Oh well... set in stone.

That aside, it's one of my favorite space scifi series.

For those of us who don't own the series, the Science Channel is apparently broadcasting it starting on March 9th. I'm looking forward to it, as I've never seen it myself.

The same reason Futurama and Arrested Development got canceled.

Yea I was so ticked off when I learned the show was canceled after I watched the first season  Luckily they were able to rap up the story in a movie and not one of those lame rush jobs of just tying up loose ends

Off Topic
Now if they can just do something similar with FlashForward :x

Really only watched the movie to any great extent, but it was one of the better (and less-predictable) sci-fi movies I've seen.

Finished watching the series, watched the movie again.

The movie moves so fast compared to the development of the series. I'd have to say that I like the series' pace better.

Isaac, I'm still missing the "problem" that you're referring to.

Isaac seems to have a serious crusade against this movie, so much so that he thinks people who like it are being sarcastic. Maybe he is thinking of the wrong movie. I personally think it was one of the best movies out that year in the theaters. It wraps up the storyline in a believable and interesting way and doesn't have a typical ending where our heroes live happily ever after.

Or, maybe it's the only excuse he could come up with to post in this thread.

Lol. The point was, you keep spouting off that you hate the movie every time someone responds in this thread. Yet you never explain why.

Xam, he did explain why. In fact, he just re-quoted his explanation.

I missed the explanation the first time, too.

The shame of it is that Fox started it all as a series, and then wrapped it up as a movie. The movie had to be able to stand by itself to have any hope of attracting people who hadn't seen firefly, so they were forced to repeat some of the background information.

A 2-hour series finale would have served your wishes much better, Isaac, but alas, we come full circle back to FOX.

They could always pull a Coyboy-bepop and jump to any previous point before the movie. Actually, there's no reason they can't continue after, but it would be a bit different. I don't think there are any plans to do this.
